A large, field-erected cooling tower had been in operation for several years, with internal maintenance focused primarily on mechanical equipment. During a planned shutdown, the client contracted CTANDA to replace the heat transfer material and drift eliminator screens.
To minimise downtime, all necessary materials were delivered to the site well in advance of the planned shutdown.
Upon initial inspection, CTANDA discovered the heat transfer material was far worse than anticipated. Excessive contamination necessitated the use of additional equipment for removal. An estimated 20-30 tons of compromised material were extracted from the tower.
The substantial weight of the contaminated fill media had caused some warping of the steel structure. CTANDA deemed the affected components unsuitable for reuse and recommended replacements to ensure a level installation surface for the new material.
CTANDA replaced the heavily contaminated fill media with new, high-performance material. This significantly improved the tower’s cooling efficiency.
New units replaced the malfunctioning drift eliminator screens—this minimised water carryover, optimising cooling tower performance.
A thorough inspection revealed the distribution system to be in poor condition. CTANDA employed high-pressure jetting techniques to clean and restore the pipes, ensuring optimal water flow throughout the tower.
The cooling tower returned to operation following the refurbishment with demonstrably enhanced performance.
The successful project led to a bi-annual maintenance agreement for multiple cooling towers on the client’s site. Additionally, CTANDA secured further contracts to refurbish other equipment.
Through effective communication, proactive problem-solving, and the delivery of superior results, CTANDA fostered a strong and ongoing partnership with the client.
This case study underscores the importance of
